Community service is a critical part of the iJAG curriculum. By getting involved in community projects, students develop a bond with people in their communities. The students also learn leadership skills, teamwork skills and communication skills that they will use after high school graduation either in the workforce or in postsecondary education. Throughout the school year, iJAG students plan fundraisers for organizations like the Make-A-Wish Foundation, the Special Olympics and other nonprofits. iJAG students also volunteer at nursing homes, food kitchens and in community clean up projects.
During the 2008-2009 school year iJAG students across Iowa contributed more than 9,000 hours of community service. If paid minimum wage, this contribution represents a monetary value of more than $65,000 invested in Iowa communities.
