Waterloo: Strengthening Engagement and Student Success
Dr. Jared Smith | Waterloo Community School District
When Waterloo Community School District talks about iJAG with Superintendent Dr. Jared Smith, they don’t describe it as simply another class; they describe it as an experience that changes students’ lives.
The district believes every student should have a meaningful connection at school, something that gives them a reason to show up, engage, and succeed. For many students, iJAG provides that connection.
“Students don’t see iJAG as just a class; they see it as an experience,” said Smith. “It’s one of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of their day.”
Beyond creating a sense of belonging, iJAG directly advances Waterloo’s strategic priorities. The district’s goals center on attendance, culture, and achievement, and district leadership sees iJAG making measurable contributions in each of those areas.
“There is evidence that students involved in iJAG have stronger academic outcomes, attendance, graduation rates, and GPA. It supports all three of our district goals: attendance, culture, and achievement.”
The superintendent also believes iJAG’s flexibility is what makes the program stand apart. By combining real-world learning, work-based experiences, and specialists with industry experience, students receive authentic career preparation while building relationships with trusted adults.
“The flexibility of iJAG allows us to meet students where they are while providing real-world experiences that prepare them for life after high school.”
When asked why policymakers and funders should continue investing in iJAG, the superintendent highlighted the program as a cost-effective investment that delivers measurable results while allowing districts to bring highly capable, nontraditional educators into schools. This flexibility helps schools better reflect and serve their student populations while preparing young people for future careers.
“We’re super happy about the partnership,” Smith added. “We’ve seen the results. We’ve seen the product, and we feel really good about what we’ve accomplished. We’re excited to continue supporting the program moving forward.”
