Case Study: John Deere
Partnership Overview:
Since 2005, the partnership between Jobs for America’s Graduates in Iowa (iJAG) and global leader John Deere has created a significant cross-industry impact in both manufacturing and agriculture. With regional production facilities and headquarters located in central and eastern Iowa, as well as western Illinois, John Deere’s 6 sites provide valuable engagement opportunities for students across 25 iJAG communities throughout the state. Additionally, the company’s global operations present unique educational and employment opportunities for iJAG’s 8,200 students and 42,000 alumni.
Partnership Evolution:
Over the past 19 years, iJAG and John Deere have continually adapted their partnership to address real-time needs within education, the John Deere organization, and Iowa’s workforce. Today, the partnership focuses on four key pillars: Engagement, Mentorships, Career Development, and Employment.
Areas of Focus:
- Strengthening the Economic Impact of Agriculture in Iowa:
Agriculture contributes nearly one-third of Iowa’s total economic output (source: Iowa Economic Development Center). iJAG has strategically partnered with employers like John Deere to support this vital industry through the manufacturing and production of agricultural equipment. - Enhancing Manufacturing Employment:
Iowa ranks third in the U.S. for the concentration of manufacturing workers (source: Iowa Economic Development Center), making it a crucial sector for economic stability and growth over the past 30 years. - Creating Statewide Engagement Opportunities:
Currently, iJAG serves 8,200 students across 45 Iowa counties. They actively seek partnerships with organizations that can provide cross-program engagement opportunities across regions.
Solutions & Outcomes:
- Engagement:
Providing exposure to careers in both manufacturing and agriculture is essential for helping students identify personalized career paths.Outcome: iJAG facilitated 150 engagements with John Deere across 25 communities, including classroom visits and onsite tours.
- Mentorships:
Building relationships with working professionals can positively influence student behavior, emotional well-being, and career aspirations.Outcome: Over the years, hundreds of John Deere employees have served as regular classroom mentors, guiding students in their career journeys.
- Career Development:
At iJAG’s 2024 Career Development Conference for juniors and seniors, John Deere sponsored a workshop that allowed attendees to engage with industry experts and participate in simulations, providing a hands-on experience of working at John Deere.Outcome: More than 600 students were exposed to John Deere’s presence at the conference, with nearly 100 attending the workshop to explore career opportunities.
- Employment & Internships:
Many iJAG students have developed interests in manufacturing and agriculture through various work experiences, including project-based learning and on-the-job training.Outcome: Currently, three iJAG students are participating in internships or apprenticeships with John Deere, with many pursuing full-time careers in fields such as welding, engineering, information technology, finance, and production.
Conclusion:
John Deere recognizes that iJAG uniquely meets the diverse needs of its students while delivering a significant impact on both public and private organizations. Year after year, the partnership strengthens through funding support, employee volunteer support, and innovative youth engagement strategies. With over $4 million in funding since 2005, John Deere stands as the largest private donor to iJAG, exemplifying its commitment to the future of Iowa’s youth.

Case Study: Principal Financial Group
Partnership Overview:
Since 2002, the relationship between Jobs for America’s Graduates in Iowa (iJAG) and Principal Financial Group® has continuously evolved and has now become one of JAG’s most progressive business relationships. Together, iJAG and Principal® have raised the bar on career preparedness, professional development, and entry into the job market. Their shared vision for access to opportunity serves as the bedrock of the partnership.
iJAG and Principal is truly a “full-package”, but there are three unique initiatives that reflect their ongoing innovation: engagement & mentorship, financial literacy & immersion programming.
Areas to Address:
- Employee Engagement: Creating a strong corporate social responsibility (CSR) program that has just as equal benefit to employees of the organization is the ultimate win-win. Through iJAG, Principal is able to connect its employees into classrooms, schools, and communities across the state through various engagement strategies that boost engagement, job satisfaction, support volunteerism, and more.
- Flexible Entry into the Job Market: Limited education is a prevalent factor in unemployment. Principal views iJAG as an essential ally for attracting, training, developing, and hiring diverse talent.
- Youth Development Above All-Else: While the Drive to J (Jobs) is a key priority for employer partners, Principal is also invested in uplifting youth and creating equitable opportunities that result in a thriving Iowa. Principal shares iJAG’s vision to equip youth with leadership training, soft skills building, and civic experiences that build character, career readiness, and preparedness for the future.
Solutions & Outcomes:
- Engagement & Mentorship: Principal exposes students to a wide array of careers through a mentorship program with employees. Through mentorship, employees provide authentic and constructive feedback to students, fostering their personal growth while creating meaningful connections that uplift every student.
- Outcome: During the 2023-2024 school year, iJAG facilitated 90 engagements with Principal which featured classroom visits and onsite tours. Additionally, 100 Principal employees volunteered their time to mentor students at 15 Des Moines metro middle schools and high schools.*
- Financial Literacy: This is where iJAG intersects the community social responsibility (CSR) arm of Principal, as iJAG seeks to equip young people with knowledge and applications to successfully manage finances and investments.
- Outcome: iJAG generated a sponsorship from Principal for its Financial Literacy competition at the 2024 Career Development Conference. In addition, Principal has continuously led related workshops and activities during special classroom visits.
- Immersion Programming: For several years, iJAG students from all across the state have had the unique opportunity to apply and participate in a paid six-week internship at Principal world headquarters in downtown Des Moines. Part of that experience includes lodging and caregiving support for students traveling to participate in the experience. Beginning in the spring of 2024, Principal shortened the format to a three-week immersion experience to support more students throughout the summer.
- Outcome: 2024 iJAG graduates participated in the new Principal Immersion Program
- Outcome: 2 iJAG graduates from the Principal immersion program earned apprentice positions in the departments of Customer Care (Dental) and Bank Operations
Conclusion: Principal helps iJAG develop and deliver workforce solutions and career preparedness. Together, our organizations are leading the drive to jobs through flexible entry formats, strong adult mentorships along with reliable and proven programming that is ever-evolving to meet the varied needs of our students and the places in which we work.
