After the Storm: South Hardin iJAG Students Shine in Community Service Effort

When storms rolled through the South Hardin community, they left behind more than just fallen branches and scattered debris – they left an opportunity for kindness, service, and teamwork. Last month, the South Hardin iJAG students recently stepped up to assist those in need, proving that small actions can make a big difference.

One of the first stops for the group was the home of 93-year-old Barbara, who needed help clearing her yard after the storm left broken limbs and debris scattered across her property. Without hesitation, the students grabbed their gloves, rakes, and determination to restore her yard. “Seeing the gratitude on Barbara’s face as we worked together was a powerful reminder for our students on why community service is so important,” said Aleatha Wessellmann, South Hardin career education specialist.

The group’s missions didn’t stop there. They also had the opportunity to assist a South Hardin teacher who had recently undergone surgery. With large limbs making her yard difficult to navigate, the team quickly got to work, removing the broken branches and ensuring her outdoor space was safe and accessible. “Knowing we could help lighten her burden during recovery made our efforts even more rewarding,” Aleatha shared.

The experience was not only about cleaning up yards, it was about building connections, learning the value of hard work, and reinforcing the importance of community support. South Hardin iJAG is proud to lend a helping hand whenever they can, and they look forward to future opportunities to serve their neighbors.

“Through these acts of service, our students continue to learn that leadership isn’t just about skills—it’s about heart,” said Aleatha. “A strong community is built on the willingness to step up, work together, and support one another when it matters most. That’s what iJAG is all about.”
