Volunteer Opportunities

Legislative Days (February and March): 

The purpose of the iJAG Legislative Days is to have students tell and promote the iJAG story to their local and other key Legislators seeking their support of our continued funding allocation through the Department of Education portion of the Governor’s to allow the continuation of  27 iJAG sites across the state of Iowa. Each current iJAG program is asked to choose and prepare three to six students to come to the Capitol in Des Moines to educate their local and other key State Senators and State Representatives about the need and benefits of iJAG. Students should be expected to spend approximately one hour prior to Legislative Day preparing for the event by familiarizing themselves with their local legislators, legislators who have impact on iJAG funding because of committees that they serve on, and legislators who serve on the iJAG Board of Directors. Students will also learn how to properly greet legislators and prepare and practice a 30-second pre-scripted presentation, including key information, that they will give to each Legislator.

Career Development Conference (April):

iJAG will hold its annual Career Development Conference (CDC) at the Polk County Convention Complex. Approximately 400 students from across the state will come together to demonstrate the leadership, communication, and employability competencies they've been working on all year with in their iJAG Programs.This is a very exciting time for both our students and staff. During our closing ceremonies, the students awarded with the most points in their competition will receive awards and one iJAG program will be nominated by their peers to receive the Outstanding Young Iowans Award. The events for the CDC this year will be the Junk Game (all students in attendance will be involved with this “opening” ice-breaker, team-building, problem-solving, creative activity), Extemporaneous Speaking, Employability Skills, Team Marketing Event, Target the Market and Proficiency 101 (computer testing of Business Reading, Math and Word Usage skills). There will also be Workshop Sessions as well as a Marketplace available for students to sign up for and attend when they are not scheduled for a competition. The Workshops will be focused on Diversity and an iJAG Alumni Panel.

Leadership Development Conference (October): 

The Iowa Jobs for America’s Graduates annual Leadership Development Conference takes place in October at Camp Dodge in Johnston, Iowa. Over 150 students from across the state will join together to build their own leadership and teamwork skills as well as to draft a year-long plan of activities to take back to the full membership of their iJAG student-led Career Association. 

The Leadership Development Conference is a state-wide event for Career Association chapter officers to attend and receive officer training in their respective offices – President, Vice President of Leadership Development, Vice President of Career Awareness, Vice President of Service Learning, Vice President of Civic/Social Awareness, and Secretary/Treasurer. During this two-day event, officers have the opportunity to not only meet other students in their elected position but to receive training from community and business leaders in their respective office and gain the leadership skills necessary to operate a successful Career Association at their high school site.

The main “product” of the Leadership Development Conference is a draft of a Chapter Activities Plan implementation matrix focusing on program goals and the activities to be conducted throughout the school year in the focus areas of Leadership Development, Career Awareness, Service Learning and Civic/Social Awareness. 

Once they return to their respective schools, this plan is communicated to all chapter members for their additional input and refinement. At this point, committees are finalized and all members of the Career Association then play an active role in successfully putting their plan into action and producing results for their student-led organization. 

iJAG Nation (May):

Each year all ninth and tenth grader iJAG students participate in an all day retreat that involves outdoor team building activities and rewarding fun with their classmates. This is a chance for students in iJAG to get out of school, go to another part of the state, compete, work together with other iJAG students and have a rewarding experience.
