iJAG students spark their futures!
In September 2023, 83 female iJAG students in grades 10-12 attended the Women in Technical Energy Careers event hosted by Alliant Energy. The event had a clear mission – to introduce female students to the boundless opportunities within technical energy careers. The event was created to attract women to careers in STEM, and nationwide. For example, only six percent of line mechanics and 16% of gas mechanics identify as women.
“Many girls are unaware that such great career paths in energy exist, especially in apprenticeships,” said Lori Wildman, Alliant Training Specialist. “This event was created just for them so they could both see and ‘try on’ these careers.”
Students gathered at the event for a day of learning, exploration and discovery. They learned about diverse career paths in energy, heard inspiring testimonials from employees who have walked the same path, and received a crash course in energy basics. Moreover, they were connected to apprenticeship opportunities that could shape their futures.
Alliant Energy has partnered with iJAG for more than four years, and this event symbolizes a long-standing, joint commitment to education and inspiration. Alliant Energy understands the importance of nurturing local talent and inspiring young minds to consider careers in energy.
School districts that participated in the event included: Nevada, Humboldt, GMG, Marshalltown and Marshalltown Learning Academy, Harlan and Boone
